Rafa returned to the living room after getting Teir bedded down and back to sleep. Sadie had removed her boots, stretched out on the couch and pulled the throw blanket over herself.

“This is some bachelor pad you’ve got here,” she said. “I like the open floor plan. I guess when you live underground, the less walls the better, huh? Are all the apartments this nice?”

“As I explained during our tour earlier, the facility was equipped with state-of-the-art amenities and furnishings when it was constructed, and although it’s now quite old, it’s been well cared for. That goes for the residential units as well. This is actually one of the smaller apartments. There are some that can accommodate large extended families very comfortably.”

“It’s so clean. Especially considering there are two young guys living here.”

Rafa smiled. “I keep it tidy so Teir doesn’t have to navigate an obstacle course of debris.” He stepped into the kitchen area and poured himself a cup of water. “Can I offer you anything to eat or drink?”

“Some water would be nice.”

He poured her a cup and brought it to her. She thanked him, drank the whole cup in a few gulps, handed it back to him, and reclined again, pulling the blanket up to her chin.

“Are you sure you’re all right staying with us?” he asked. “My grandmother said you’re welcome to stay with her at the clinic, and my sister also opened her home to you. She and her husband and daughter live in a much larger unit. They even have a guest room.”

“In my wildest dreams, I can’t imagine anywhere I’d rather sleep right now than this freakishly comfortable couch.”

He smiled. “I’ll be just down the hall should you need anything.”
